Augsburg manager’s words earlier today don’t mean a thing. What else could he say? Brendan was saying exactly the same about Matt O’Riley last week…

The panic stricken element amongst our supporters are beside themselves with worry after FC Augsburg manager Jess Thorup spoke about the future of Celtic target Arne Engels.

Thorup said: “ I think he will be in our squad for our next game against Heidenheim on Sunday. I heard about the rumours, don’t know what will happen in the next couple of days.”

That to me sounds like a man who knows as much as us regarding the situation surrounding the Belgian under 21 international, which is absolutely nothing. Indeed Brendan Rodgers said basically the same thing about Matt O’Riley leading up to the St Mirren game, and the next day he was heading to Brighton in a £30 million deal.

So don’t fret about Thorup’s words, he’s just saying that he knows nothing of the situation and he’s planning for his side’s next match in the same way he always does, and that is to pick the best players which are available to him. Just like Brendan said to Sky Sports last week that Matt O’Riley would be in his squad for the St Mirren game as things stand.

Whatever deal is being negotiated in the background at the minute, the manager will have little or no input. Engels may well be in his manager’s thoughts for their next match but that could all change today, tomorrow or knowing Celtic on Friday afternoon!
