As Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade’s spectacular summer carries on, Kicker insists that the rising Bundesliga will not make a decision on his future anytime soon. The 23-year-old who has been affectionately dubbed the “Two Meter Tall Messi” and the “DFB Wolverine” by German football fans first needs to complete his tour-of-duty with the Germany U21s. A much-needed vacation will then follow.
Placed under pressure to begin new contract talks with their star, reliable sources report that Stuttgart have initiated negotiations with Woltemade’s camp. The fact that Woltemade had to pull double duty with Julian Nagelsmann’s Nationalmannschaft and Antonio Di Salvo’s U21s nevertheless leaves the exhausted striker with little bandwidth to consider contractual matters.
Woltemade was among the players given a break against the England U21s on Wednesday as Di Salvo rotated out his entire starting XI. As German journalists remain eager to talk to the Bremen-native about essentially anything these days, Kicker solicited the player’s thoughts on his rest-cure. Woltemade is currently the leading goal-scorer in the UEFA U21 European Championship after notching four tallies.
“I have to say that the break after the two games did me good,” Woltemade told Kicker. “Goals are nice, but being fit and having enough strength for the rest of the games is even nicer.
“[Remaining the tournament’s leading goal-scorer] played on my mind a bit,” Woltemade went on to say. “but that’s not my primary objective. Otherwise, I would have pushed to play.”
