Ipswich Town have missed out on the signing of Oli McBurnie after the forward opted for a move to Hull City.

According to Hull Live, the Tigers have won the race to the forward’s signature amid speculation over his future.

It’s been claimed that the Scotland international had interest from the likes of the Tractor Boys, as well as his former clubs Sheffield United and Swansea City.

McBurnie featured 34 times in La Liga last season, contributing three goals and six assists for Las Palmas.

Oli McBurnie “no big loss” claim

When asked about missing out on McBurnie, FLW’s Ipswich fan pundit Adam Wilkin claimed that it’s not a big deal, citing his personality and potential wages as factors for why.

He believes the forward coming in would’ve been a worst-case-scenario target, and that the club will have other options in the market before the window shuts.

“Don’t get me wrong, I think McBurnie is a very good striker for the Championship level, but I’m not that bothered he’s gone to Hull at all,” Wilkin told Football League World.

“I had question marks about his past discretions in terms of a social aspect, and I know Mark Ashton and Kieran McKenna like to have good eggs, so to speak, in the dressing room.

“I think he may have upset that balance a little bit.

“He’s also played at a fairly high level, so I imagine his wages were quite high, and to bring in someone who doesn’t really fit our model of young players, he’d be more of an experienced head, probably on a high wage and probably playing second fiddle to George Hirst, so it was never one that made much sense to me.

“Given the state that Hull are in at the moment, I’m quite interested that he’s gone there, but I’m sure we’ll have other targets, and he was probably very worst-case-scenario anyway, so it’s no big loss that he is off that target list.”

Ipswich will begin their league campaign on 8 August with a trip to face Birmingham City.

Ipswich don’t need McBurnie signing

Bringing in McBurnie was not going to be the difference between a top two finish and a top six finish for Ipswich this season.

He would’ve provided some solid depth, maybe offered a handful of goals and could’ve proven useful if an injury crisis struck.

As a free agent, it was a risk-free deal for Ipswich to pursue, but now they can move onto other targets that might have a greater long-lasting impact on the team.
