Newcastle United owners knew what they were doing – Trust the process

If you read or hear anyone outside of the Newcastle United boardroom claim they know the financial situation and transfer strategies of the club, take it with a grain of salt.

They do not.

We all have theories and opinions.

Perhaps some journalists have some additional insight (from players, agents, and other ‘insiders’) but, they are not getting any additional information from the Newcastle United owners, than they want to release.

Please share your thoughts and opinions – it makes for an interesting diversion whilst we’re waiting for the season to start. However, when opinions, theories, or lies, are seized on by lazy and unscrupulous journalists, podcasters, and social media ‘personalities’, this is problematic. It’s best to just ignore the noise and be sceptical of everything. Our club is tight-lipped.

My opinion is just that – an opinion.

However, rather than being based on what a big mouth said online, in the paper, or at the pub, I am basing it on past NUFC club performance.

The latest meltdown by many in the Newcastle United fanbase over the weekend and continuing into the week, may or may not have had merit. The fact is, we do not know. Journalists and podcasters do not know. The Newcastle United owners know. The transfer team knows.

Were the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) going to be breached without player sales? Maybe.

Was Newcastle United seriously considering selling Isak or Gordon? Unlikely.

Was the club in panic mode? No.

Was Liverpool, Chelsea, or other clubs enquiring about our top players? Yes, as is their right (but it doesn’t mean Newcastle United didn’t give a firm no, or counter with a sky-high price!).

Did Newcastle United get good value for Anderson and Minteh? Yes.

Looking at my answers to these questions are based on the past deals done by the Newcastle United owners.

They’ve been shrewd.

These Newcastle United owners have walked away from ‘deals’ that did not have value, and they bought and sold at good value.

In fact, the only deal that they arguably overpaid was with AC Milan (outcome to be determined) and Chris Wood (who helped keep us up and had a net outlay of only £10m).

The Newcastle United owners have invested wisely within the constraints of the Premier League’s current rules (that protect the clubs with established revenue).

The selling of Minteh and Anderson for a reported £68m was a coup done by a club with a plan – not a panicking bunch of chancers!

And, although I cannot know, I’d be very surprised if there was not a sell-on clause included in each contract. Yes, both are young, exciting talents, but neither has scored a Premier League goal. If Minteh thrives in Brighton and/or Anderson thrives at Nottingham Forest, our club will effectively be able to buy for less than our competitors for the player. Or, if we elected not to go back after the player, we’d get paid for the players twice!

I believe that Newcastle United didn’t mind the rumours and the hysteria as it played into their hands.

If other teams believe we’re cash-poor relating to PSR (FFP) it helps in negotiation and it also helps gauge interest other clubs have in our players.

Whilst I admit that rumours can begin with reliable sources (like other clubs, agents, or players), I am confident they didn’t originate within the club.

So, I’ll continue reading, dreaming, hypothesizing, and theorizing.

However, I’ll allow the Newcastle United owners and the club hierarchy to follow their plan to win trophies and contend for league titles year after year.

They’re the professionals. They are the only ones who really know.

They know the options available and have a list of targets and players that will move the club forward. And they have the nerve, moxie, nous, and experience to strike the best value deals.
