Lloyd Kelly looks as though he could become Eddie Howe’s first summer signing.

The 25 year old is out of contract at the end of this month and Newcastle United set to sign at least one, possibly two, central defenders ahead of next season.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are both recovering from serious injures and they will each miss a significant part of the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Eddie Howe originally bought Lloyd Kelly when he was at Bournemouth, a £13m purchase from Bristol City back in summer 2019.

The left footed defender is versatile and can play at left-back as well as in the middle of defence.

The usually very reliable Mike McGrath of The Telegraph has now reported that ‘Newcastle United will attempt to get a deal for Bournemouth centre-back Lloyd Kelly over the line this week.’

There had also been interest in the right footed 26 year old Tosin Adarabioyo but it appears he is now set to join Chelsea after they offered higher wages.

The man from The Telegraph though, says that talks with Lloyd Kelly and his representatives will take place this week and the journalist adding that his information is that there’s confidence the deal will get done.

With PSR pressures and no doubts other additional targets for other positions that Eddie Howe will want to pursue for next season, it would be a massive boost to bring in a Premier League experienced but still young centre-back without having to pay any transfer fee.

Unlike Tosin at Fulham who was frozen out of the matchday playing squad in the later stages of the season when making clear he wasn’t signing a new contract, Lloyd Kelly played to the very end with Bournemouth.

Kelly experienced hip, hamstring and calf injuries this past season but all 23 times he was named in the squad for Premier League matches he got on the pitch, starting 17 and off the bench in another six.
