Newcastle United have identified VfB Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade as a summer transfer target after his RB Leipzig counterpart Benjamin Sesko turned them down, according to the Sun.

The Slovenian prefers Manchester United ahead of a move to the St James’ Park club, and Newcastle are now looking elsewhere.

The Toons could now go for the £40 million-rated Woltemade, but they will face competition from the Red Devils who have him as plan B should a move for Sesko fall through.

The 6ft 6in Germany international striker featured for his country’s under-21s at the European Under-21 Championship last month, notching six goals to emerge as the highest goalscorer and helping his side reach the final.

Woltemade was also in fine form for the Bundesliga club last season, scoring 17 times in 33 games, and he could be perfect for Newcastle.

The Magpies want a striker even if the wantaway Alexander Isak stays beyond this summer, and the 23-year-old fits the bill given his style of play.

Woltemade is an excellent dribbler despite his frame and height, and he is also an excellent passer due to his great vision. He also plays as a second striker, behind the striker in the number 10 role and on the left wing.

He has what it takes to complement Isak or replace the Sweden international striker, and manager Eddie Howe will hope to get him and finally sign a number 9 after missing out on his top targets so far.

Liam Delap and Joao Pedro both opted to join Chelsea, Hugo Ekitike moved to Liverpool, while Brentford have refused to allow Yoane Wissa leave.

Woltemade is not the only one on their radar as Newcastle are also keeping tabs on Fulham striker Rodrigo Muniz, and more targets could emerge in the coming weeks as the summer transfer window approaches its final weeks.
