This eight goal friendly ‘thriller’ ended A-League All Stars 8 Newcastle 0.

This game followed on less than 48 later after the win over Tottenham on Wednesday.

Alexander Isak equalising in that game after James Maddison had opened the scored (the match officials failing to spot a handball by the Tottenham player before he put the ball in the net.

United winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after the game ended 1-1.

No late drama though in this game on Friday…

A rare chance for Newcastle United fans in Australia and ‘nearby’ countries to be able to see NUFC in the flesh and hopefully not too many of them overly disappointed with what they witnessed today, both the line up and the actual match.

A very young Newcastle United reserve side hammered, none of the starting eleven having previously started a Premier League match.

Eddie Howe travelled with a squad of 29 players but Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett didn’t play any minutes and indeed weren’t named in either matchday squad.

Whilst today, the three first team squad players on the bench (Anderson, Hall and Trippier) not coming off the bench.

I am guessing that (hopefully) very few ‘down under’ Newcastle fans went to just today’s match and probably went to both, or just the Tottenham one.

However, I think that if you are going to do this, then as a club you have to advertise this a reserve side playing in this second friendly today. Plus, charging Newcastle fans who aren’t season ticket holders or members, to watch a stream of Friday’s match, is laughable. Again, especially when not saying in advance that this would be a reserve team playing.

I don’t attach any blame on Eddie Howe for those Newcastle United fans feeling short-changed.

The travelling party for Newcastle United’s post-season trip to Australia has been confirmed as the team prepare to head Down Under following Sunday’s final Premier League match of the season at Brentford.

Eddie Howe’s side will kick off the city’s ‘Global Football Week – Melbourne’ event against Tottenham Hotspur at the world-famous Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) at 7:45pm (all times AEST) on Wednesday, 22nd May.

Then on Friday, 24th May, the Magpies face the A-League All Star Men at 5:05pm. The venue is the Marvel Stadium in Melbourne’s Docklands.

Head coach Howe has named a 29-man squad for the two games:

The trip will mark Newcastle United’s first visit to Oceania since July 2014, when the Magpies won the Football United Tour in New Zealand with victories over Sydney FC and Wellington Phoenix.

Newcastle’s Active Fan allocation for the two games has sold out but tickets in alternate areas of the ground are still on sale to supporters wanting to back to Magpies in Melbourne.
