What do you make to this Newcastle United start to the season?

Personally, I think NUFC have done ok.

Not brilliant, not terrible.

Only in brief spells has the attacking play clicked.

However, the defending, commitment and desire shown by the players, has been top notch.

Especially when you look at the number of players that Eddie Howe has been missing.

As well as those who clearly are taking time to get back to their best and full fitness, after injury, summer international commitments and indeed, 10 month suspension.

The net result is nine matches (all competitions) played so far, five wins and three draws, one defeat.

However, where does this Newcastle United start to the season register, when compared to the opening nine matches in recent seasons…

2024/25 – Won 5 Drawn 3 Lost 1 (Eddie Howe)

2023/24 –  Won 5 Drawn 1 Lost 3 (Eddie Howe)

2022/23 – Won 3 Drawn 5 Lost 1 (Eddie Howe)

2021/22 – Won 0 Drawn 3 Lost 6 (Steve Bruce)

2020/21 – Won 5 Drawn 2 Lost 2 (Steve Bruce)

2019/20 – Won 2 Drawn 2 Lost 5 (Steve Bruce)

2018/19 – Won 0 Drawn 2 Lost 7 (Rafa Benitez)

2017/18 – Won 3 Drawn 2 Lost 4 (Rafa Benitez)

2016/17 – Championship

2015/16 – Won 1 Drawn 3 Lost 5 (Steve McClaren)

2014/15 – Won 2 Drawn 4 Lost 3 (Alan Pardew)

2013/14 – Won 5 Drawn 1 Lost 3 (Alan Pardew)

2012/13 – Won 2 Drawn 4 Lost 3 (Alan Pardew)

2011/12 – Won 6 Drawn 3 Lost 1 (Alan Pardew)

That’s right, 2024/25 is the best start to a Newcastle United season since 2011/22, 13 years ago.

That was the season United went on to finish fifth just missing out on top four.

So, the BEST Newcastle United start to a season since 2011.

A great platform for Eddie Howe and his squad to build on, with far better to come in terms of performances once the likes of Willock, Isak, Wilson and others are fully fit, plus now clearly the likes of Bruno, Trippier and Gordon having improved as they’ve headed toward that full fitness, following minimal pre-seasons with their club.
