In a recent edition, SportBILD mentioned that Newcastle United are facing stiff competition for SC Freiburg playmaker Merlin Röhl this summer. It has been claimed that the Magpies would have to rival Everton, Liverpool and Crystal Palace in the race to land the German attacker.

Rohl’s Impressive Form In German Football

Rohl caught the eye at times for the German club in the previous campaign but struggled to be fruitful with his performances in the final third. The 22-year-old registered one assist but failed to score in 20 matches for Freiburg last season across various competitions.

The German talent did well to average 1.12 shots per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga but only kept 25% of his attempts on target. He even distributed the ball well in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 76% in the German first division (stats via fbref.com).

Rohl has shown signs of his potential in Germany, so it is no surprise that Newcastle are hoping to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.

Newcastle United Are Facing Stiff Competition For Rohl: Is He Worth The Fight?

Rohl is an energetic attacker who can create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third and can make some driving runs with the ball as well. He can strike the ball well from long range but needs to add more goals and assists to his game this season.

The German sensation usually plays in the number ten position but can also play as a box-to-box midfielder or as a striker if told to do so by his manager. However, only time will tell whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Newcastle manage to get him on board this summer.

We can expect Rohl to add more energy and dynamism to Eddie Howe’s midfield. He has what it takes to serve as a decent, rotational piece in the Tyneside club’s squad.

At 22, Rohl has the potential to be a future star in English football. Therefore, he would be well worth the fight, so the Magpies should consider sealing a move to bring him to St. James’ Park in this summer transfer window.
