A lot has been said and written about Newcastle United and PSR, as well as their overall position on transfers in this summer 2024 window.

This all came to a head in a flurry of activity as 30 June 2024 was reached.

The last day of the 2023/24 season accounting period for Newcastle United, as well as being the final day of the latest three-year/season accounting period for PSR purposes. No club is allowed to lose more than £105m over three years, although some expenditures don’t count towards PSR losses.

Deadline day for PSR purposes saw Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson both sold, to Brighton and Forest respectively, for reported combined transfer fees of close to £70m. Various reports claim different amounts but basically both players are said to have moved for fees of £30m+ each.

A lot of nonsense, spoken and written, about what has allegedly gone on, but by far the best overall article going into detail, is from Chris Waugh at The Athletic, who states that he got his information from a number of inside NUFC sources, on condition of anonymity.

Waugh said that on that final deadline day, Newcastle United still needed to do deals worth £50m to satisfy the PSR.

However, as well as all the doom and gloom surrounding having to sell one or more promising players simply to satisfy this immediate PSR problem, the man from The Athletic also with some positive news.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic discussing Newcastle United position on transfers and PSR – 1 July 2024:

‘Newcastle United actually now have decent capacity to spend given the 2021-22 accounts have dropped off the PSR cycle and income from their Adidas deal can be booked

Somehow, some way, Newcastle hope they have averted a crisis.

Confirmation of whether Newcastle have avoided a sanction may not arrive until January, but surely a senior figure must outline what the exact situation is before then.

Although further exits will follow, for now, at least, the focus turns to incomings and Howe’s desire to sign a centre-back, right-winger, forward and another goalkeeper. With the 2021-22 accounts dropping off the three-year PSR period and lucrative sponsorships like the shirt agreement with Adidas bolstering Newcastle’s income, they should now have decent capacity to invest in their squad again.’

As a number of people have commented, PSR has now created two deadlines in a summer transfer window. The end of June for immediate PSR purposes, then a further two months where clubs will trade players in and out, this summer the final day of the window is Friday 30 August 2024.

As Chris Waugh says, not all doom and gloom at Newcastle United, with ‘decent capacity to invest in their squad again.’

Both Lewis Hall and Lloyd Kelly officially became permanent Newcastle United signings today, whilst the last 24 hours have seen goalkeepers John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos also arrive.

With Nick Pope set to continue at number one, these two arrivals with Mark Gillespie would appear to complete the goalkeeping picture, that Chris Waugh said was due to be strengthened.

So now hopefully all eyes on which ‘centre-back, right-winger, forward…’ will be brought in.

Today brought an exclusive from Sky Sports that Newcastle United are in talks with a Saudi Pro-League club to sell Miguel Almiron, which would help create room and money/PSR boost to help bring in that new right-winger.

Whilst I think it is widely expected that we will see the same with Callum Wilson sold, if/when a new forward is successfully targeted. A right-footed central defender has been talked about for some time and this looks the window when that will happen, competition and eventual replacement for Fabian Schar.
