It's been two weeks since everyone who works at Hillsborough was supposed to be paid the money they were owed for their work in the fifth month of the year. We're now into the sixth month of 2025 and, as things stand, some members of staff still haven't been paid their full May salaries.

This whole debacle has landed the club in a bit of potentially catastrophic trouble. Wednesday have been placed under an embargo by the EFL, limiting what players they can sign, and are under serious threat of being handed a three-window transfer ban because of the multiple late payments they have made over the past 12 months.

Protests against owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri have intensified, but, on the staff payment front, there does at least appear to be some positive movement.

Positive update on Sheffield Wednesday payment saga issued

According to The Star, non-playing staff will receive the money that they are owed by the club today (Friday, 13th June). As for the players, there is less clarity on when they will get their wages.

It was reported that people working at Hillsborough only got £700 of their expected fees on the last payday. An emergency funding service was provided by the Owls, and it is reported to have helped those in need.

On Thursday, the Professional Footballers' Association released a statement condemning Wednesday for not properly keeping their players up to date with the timeline of the situation. They described the late payments to the players, the second time such an incident has taken place out of the last three paydays, as "unacceptable."

The Star also reported that the members of Danny Rohl's side had become more and more frustrated with the poor communication from the club.

May wages scandal could be the first sign of a quick Sheffield Wednesday decline

First and foremost, the non-payment of people is the absolute biggest concern at Hillsborough right now. As the PFA said in their statement, you should be able to expect your wages to be paid in full and on time.

What will also concern the supporters is that this is a hallmark of a team that could start to sink quickly. Look at all the clubs that have quickly fallen down the footballing pyramid, or dropped off the face of it, because of poor financial management.
