Although Rohl hasn't quite left Wednesday yet, the departure of the club's manager could be a bitter pill for fans of the club to swallow this summer.

But this news could be tempered by emerging reports from Portugal, which indicate that a former fan favourite could be about to become available again.

Carlos Carvalhal and Sporting Braga are about to part ways

Reports from the Portuguese media outlet A Bola have indicated that the former Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal could be about to lose his job, despite his team having just finished 4th in the Primeira Liga at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Carvalhal arrived at Braga under somewhat unusual circumstances. He was brought in once the 2024/25 season had already started, to replace Daniel Sousa, who had only been with the club for a month.

But Braga's fourth-place finish, which was enough to see them earn a place in the qualification rounds for next year's Europa League, wasn't enough to satisfy the owners of the club.

Braga's owners have previously stated that they intend to win the Primeira Liga within four years, which is certainly an ambitious target for a club that have never won it before.

Reports from the Portuguese press now indicate that he is set to leave the club.

Sheffield Wednesday could be tempted by Carvalhal's availability

In comparison with more recent struggles, Carvalhal's previous spell with Sheffield Wednesday looks like a bit of a golden era for the club, albeit one that didn't end with much tangible success.

He first arrived at Hillsborough ten years ago in June, having been out of the game for the previous years. But with club owner Dejphon Chansiri then spending quite heavily on new players having bought them at the start of that year, expectations were fairly high.

His first season ended with Wednesday finishing 6th in the Championship and then beating Brighton & Hove Albion in the semi-finals of the play-offs before losing the final 1-0 to Hull City.

The following year they did even better, finishing in 4th place in the table. But for the second year in a row, the play-offs were not kind to them. This time around they lost on penalty kicks to Huddersfield Town in the semi-finals after drawing both matches.

Carvalhal left Sheffield Wednesday on Christmas Eve 2017 by mutual consent, but he wasn't out of the game for long. Four days later he was appointed the new manager of Swansea City, who were at that time a Premier League club, but he couldn't keep them in the top flight and left after they were relegated the following May.

Losing Danny Rohl, a popular and progressive young manager, may be a bitter pill for Sheffield Wednesday fans to swallow, but it may be sweetened slightly by the news that one of their favourites from the past is just about to become available again.
