Inter beat Lecce 4-0 in the end to make it ten wins from ten in all competitions in 2024.

That scoreline suggests a rather comfortable victory for the Nerazzurri.

And in the closing stages of the match that is certainly what it was.

But initially, the pitch actually told a much different story.

In the first fifteen or twenty minutes, it was arguably Lecce who looked like the more convincing side.

The Puglian team played an intense, high-tempo style that caused Inter a lot of problem.

Lecce played with bravery, pressing Inter in a man-marking system, which denied Inter’s players much in the way of time and space on the ball, or passing options.

The result was that, during the first half, the Nerazzurri struggled to establish their rhythm in possession.

As the match wore on, however, it became a different story.

Inter made a few tweaks that allowed them to circulate the ball more easily.

And this allowed the Nerazzurri the fluidity to create attacking moves. These resulted in a couple of goals in quick succession in the second half.

Bergomi observed that “In the first few minutes, Lecce tried to press Inter high up the pitch.”

“They really attacked them high up,” he added.

“But then the Nerazzurri took a bit to find solutions to the press,” Bergomi noted.

The former defender suggested that “After that, the match opened up for them.”

Inter won through two goals from Lautaro Martinez, as well as goals from midfielder Davide Frattesi and defender Stefan de Vrij in the second half.
