FLW's Bolton Wanderers fan pundit has given his verdict on George Thomason's future ahead of the January transfer window
George Thomason’s future at Bolton Wanderers was the subject of a transfer offer last year.
It was reported by The Bolton News in August 2023 that Bristol City made an offer in the region of £1 million to sign the midfielder.
However, the youngster rejected the opportunity to sign for the Robins, according to Bristol World, instead electing to remain with the League One side.
Thomason has remained a key part of Ian Evatt’s side, featuring regularly as the team reached the play-off final last season.
While injuries have hampered the 22-year-old in recent weeks, he made a return to action in the team’s 2-1 win over Blackpool last weekend, with his goal inspiring a comeback victory.
When asked whether the club would consider a £1 million offer for Thomason now, FLW’s Bolton fan pundit Liam O’Meara suggested that no decision should be made over his future until the summer.
He praised the midfielder’s impact upon returning to the team against Blackpool, and believes that the team’s promotion chances rest on keeping him for the remainder of the campaign.
“With George Thomason, I would be making absolutely zero decisions on him until the summer,” O’Meara told Football League World.
“He is absolutely vital chance Bolton have of getting out of this division this season.
“The performance he put in after injury at home to Blackpool was just nothing short of magnificent.
“He’s now our captain, our driving force, he’s a year later in terms of development, so £1 million a year ago needs to be much higher than that this time.
“Every player has his price, of course, and until Bolton are tested they will need to consider an offer, but, for me, I would be very reluctant to part with him until the end of the season.”
Thomason has come through the ranks of the Bolton academy system to become a key part of the first-team squad.
He was a part of their promotion campaign from League Two, making 24 appearances that season as a teenager, contributing one goal and one assist.
The midfielder has since featured 82 times for Bolton in League One, playing a key role in their run to the play-off final last season.
Thomason has a contract with the Whites until the summer of 2027.
Waiting on any major decision surrounding Thomason until the summer makes the most sense for Bolton at the moment.
Of course, if a massive offer comes in during the winter market then they may have no choice but to cash in.
But £1 million may no longer be enough to persuade the League One side, especially midway through their attempt to gain promotion to the Championship.
If Evatt’s side are to make up the ground to the top six, then having Thomason play a key role in the side will be crucial.
