Napoli have reportedly taken a major stance on unsettled Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, even as they close in on Rasmus Hojlund.
Transfer speculation surrounding Mainoo has dominated headlines over the past few days, amidst suggestions that he could be on his way out of United before the summer window closes.
Mainoo has yet to get a taste of Premier League action this term, having been an unused substitute in both opening fixtures against Arsenal and Fulham. It appears he is firmly at the bottom of the pecking order, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte all ahead of him.
After the final whistle at Craven Cottage, Amorim told reporters that Mainoo is competing against Fernandes for a starting berth.
Mainoo is believed to be open to leaving United and if suitable offers arrive, the Red Devils could sanction an exit. There has been no shortage of interest in the England international.
He has so far been linked to the likes of Leeds, Fulham, Brighton and Hove Albion, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea and Newcastle.
A recent report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Amorim will have a sit-down with Amorim and the club’s senior hierarchy to understand his role in the team moving forward. Only after these discussions will a definitive decision on the player’s future be made.
As the situation rumbles on, the Daily Mail reveal that Napoli have entered the fray for Mainoo and are preparing to open talks to snap him up.
Napoli are on the brink of completing a transfer for Hojlund but it appears they are also keen on Mainoo.
Jack Gaughan reports, “Napoli are emerging as surprise suitors for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.”
“United remain in negotiations with the Serie A champions over a loan move for striker Rasmus Hojlund, which is likely to include an obligation to buy based on appearances.”
“The Italians are expected to raise the prospect of Mainoo during talks this week as they eye up a potential third signing from Old Trafford in 12 months after Scott McTominay’s exploits.”
It’s understood that a move to Napoli would likely appeal to Mainoo, since he wants to play in the Champions League if he departs Old Trafford before Monday.
Napoli’s current midfield options include McTominay, Kevin de Bruyne, Frank Anguissa, Stanislav Lobotka and Billy Gilmour. There is competition for places but Mainoo is willing to take up the challenge.
