Former Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy has listed the three teammates who lent him money to pay for child support upon the club withholding wages.

The former France international defender is currently in the process of claiming £11.5 million in unpaid wages from when he was first charged in August 2021 and suspended without pay by Manchester City.

The now 30-year-old was ultimately cleared of all charges in 2023 following a series of rape and attempted rape charges made against him, before going on to revive his professional playing career in the French game.

It has been revealed that while City continued paying Mendy after his first arrest in November 2020, it had been argued that they did not have to after he was charged as his bail conditions – one of which prevented him from going near the club’s stadium or training ground – and an FA suspension meant he was not able to perform his contractual duties.

Now, court documents have stated that Mendy “very quickly ran out of money” and had to sell his Cheshire mansion to cover legal fees, bills and child support payments after his wages were withheld.

As part of a witness statement provided to an employment tribunal, Benjamin Mendy has revealed the names of three Manchester City players that aided his payments for child support after the club withheld his wages upon being charged in 2021.

“I struggled to pay my child support, I felt awful,” Benjamin Mendy revealed, as relayed by the Evening Standard.

He continued, “Raheem Sterling, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez all lent me money to help me try and pay my legal fees and support my family.”

Mendy has also stated that his agent, Meissa N’diaye, paid towards his legal fees in addition to support provided by his former Manchester City teammates.

Benjamin Mendy had first joined Manchester City from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in a £52 million deal back in 2017, going on to win Premier League titles in all of the 2017/2018, 2018/2019 and 2020/2021 campaigns.

Mendy’s final appearance for Pep Guardiola and Manchester City was in the Premier League on 15 August 2021, not leaving the club until his contract expired in June 2023 and now currently plays for French side Lorient.

The tribunal hearing is expected to last two days.
