Aleigh Gambone was hailed as one of the standout signings for Glasgow City by a lot of people last season, and she certainly proved her worth. She would regularly boss the midfield, can pass the ball extremely well, and even picked up the club’s Coaches Player of the Year award. She was a regular in last season’s City side as well, having made 31 appearances for the club. In this time, she managed five goals and seven assists in the league.
You can imagine that City fans would’ve been hoping to keep the clearly-talented midfielder, but it wasn’t to be as she departed the club at the end of May. If Celtic are looking for a midfielder who has proven that she can perform in the SWPL, then Gambone is one of the best options out there right now, especially considering she is a free agent.

Olufolasade ‘Sade’ Adamolekun currently plays as a midfielder for Hearts, but she is again a brilliant option should Celtic go looking for more talent currently playing domestically. Sade has been an influential player in the midfield for 5th-place Hearts and would certainly add to the talent that we already have. Having signed with Hearts last summer, 24/25 was Sade’s debut professional season and she certainly showed her promise.
She has even been included in the Jamaican national team on a number of occasions, making history in 2019 by being a part of the 23 player squad that became the first Caribbean team to participate in a FIFA Women’s World Cup. She was only 18 when she achieved this feat, and has been included on many lists throughout the years, including ‘top 10 teenagers to watch’. She is contracted to the Jambos until 2026, but it would be interesting to see Celtic opt for an earlier move for the talented midfielder.

Another pick from Hearts but one that would certainly be worth a look. Lizzie Waldie is a defender who signed for Hearts in the summer of 2023, and with only four named defenders on our books currently, she would be a very welcome addition. Hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Hearts supporters throughout last season, Waldie only missed two games last season and proved to be a brilliant addition to the Hearts backline. In her own words, she’s a tall player who enjoys winning balls in the air, but also a defender who likes to thread passes further up the pitch. The nine assists that she had to her name last season further push this fact home, and this is something that I’m sure supporters of the Hoops would welcome to the team. She is currently contracted to Hearts until next summer.

Although we have two Scottish goalkeepers as options, if Elena Sadiku were to opt for proven talent between the sticks, Benedicte Haaland would be a good pick. Having previously played in the league for Hibs in the 22/23 season, Haaland was a fan favourite for the Hibees.
She managed to earn a move to Bristol City on a short-term deal at the end of that campaign, before opting for a change to Women’s Championship side Southampton in January 2024. It was announced at the end of the 24/25 campaign that she would depart the club upon the expiry of her contract, and having only made a couple of appearances since departing Scotland, she could be keen to establish herself yet again. At the age of 27, she has proven that she can handle being in the top flight of Scottish women’s football, so could it be a move that Sadiku could see as worth the risk? Potentially.

This is my rogue pick but Alba Cerrato is a young player who may be looking for more game time on loan. She currently plays for Sevilla, alongside Paula Partido, and is touted as one of the best young talents that Liga F has to offer. It’s safe to say that the chances of getting her on a permanent basis are zero, but a loan deal would be interesting as Cerrato would fit perfectly into an attacking Celtic side.
Capable of playing as a winger or as a striker, Cerrato attracted some attention for her performance at the 2024 Women’s U17 Euros. She helped Spain secure their fifth title with a win over England, and finished as Player of the Tournament.
The striker has been noticed for her excellent awareness, able to find the right space in order to pick up the ball. She has also been noted for being able to play on the shoulder of the defensive line perfectly, rarely being caught offside but being able to break it so that chances are never wasted.
She is currently 18 years old and may struggle to break into the first team, but if the chance were ever to come up for her to develop her skills in Scotland, would she take it? All of her notable abilities seem like they would fit perfectly into a Sadiku Celtic team, and with achievements already under her belt at such a young age, she could be exactly the attacking threat we need to change our fortunes.
