Chelsea need to beat Liverpool today to stay in the race for the Champions League. It’s as simple as that. It’s a good time to play them, given we’re at home and they may have relaxed a little, having won the title last weekend.

But it’s never easy playing them, and our record shows that. We haven’t beaten then in any competition anywhere in 10 games. Our last Premier League win over them at Stamford Bridge was, incredibly, in May 2018.

Conte’s fading giants still a force to be reckoned with

We looked back at that team and the player ratings we gave them at full time. At that point in time, Antonio Conte’s season season was coming to an end and things were fraying a little behind the scenes. It was becoming clear he wasn’t going to stick around.

Nobody knew at that point that things were going to trend steadily downwards. We’ve had some glory years since, especially under Thomas Tuchel, but the great team you see below is a long way from the group we have now.

There’s a world class player in goal, in defence, midfield and attack.

In Thibaut Courtois we had a world class goalkeeper, playing one of his final games for the club. We’ve certainly never had anyone as good in goal since.

Amazingly, ultra flop Tiemoue Bakayoko started this game, although when you’ve got a midfield with Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante, you can afford one passenger. He actually played well, according to our ratings.

Marcos Alonso was going his usual good work down the left and almost scored a screamer.
