Vincenzo Montella was a candidate for the Roma bench before the Giallorossi picked Claudio Ranieri, also because of the timing. They would have had to wait to install the current Turkey manager. He could be an option for the future as well. The veteran boss is expected to take on a front-office role at the end of the season.

The former striker dished on the rumors in his latest presser (via OneFootball).

“There’s always a lot of chatter in football. I’m truly happy to be here. There’s some criticism at times, but I still feel beloved. If I leave one day, the president of the Football Association will be the first one to know it. We have a nice relationship and can talk about anything. Everybody can be serene now, as I’ll stay here. It’s better to stop talking about it. It’s a distraction and we need to focus on our games.”

The talks collapsed also because Roma and Montella weren’t on the same page about the length of his contract, La Repubblica reported. Hakan Calhanoglu corroborated the murmurs (via Fanpage).

“After the reports started spreading, we all told him to stay. Everybody loves and cares for him here. I’ve played for the national team for 11 years, and I’ve seen everything. There’s great unity within the team after the European Championship. Everybody respects each other. We’ve spent 45 days in retreat, and there were no issues between us thanks to his communication style.”

Our Take on Roma and Montella

Ranieri is a glorified caretaker manager, and, if things go well, the Friedkin family will surely be tempted to go with another manager who’s very familiar with the town and the club to succeed him.
