Paul Pogba (32) was at least on the pitch on Friday night as he was presented to the crowd at the Stade Louis II. However, he did not kick a ball during AS Monaco’s defeat to Inter Milan (1-2) in a pre-season friendly.
The Frenchman joined Monaco earlier this summer, signing a two-year deal. Speaking at his presentation in early July, he expressed an eagerness to get back on the pitch, following an absence of almost two years, due to a doping ban. However, the Principality club’s CEO, Thiago Scuro, tempered expectations, stating that the club were working on a three-month plan to get the former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder up to speed.
That timeline, which has Pogba making a return around the start of October, is still the official line from the club. However, the player himself spoke to BeIn Sports ahead of Monaco’s friendly and provided an update on his highly anticipated return to action.
“My fitness is going well. There are very good staff members who are looking after me, and so it is only a matter of time. There are steps. I don’t want to step onto the pitch and not be myself. I think that everyone expects to see a great Paul Pogba on the pitch,” he said in an interview, transcribed by Lig’ASM.
