Millwall boss Joe Edwards has revealed that he would be open to Romain Esse leaving the club on loan this month, if the right offer was presented to the club for the teenager.

The 18-year-old has impressed this season for the Lions, breaking into the team as a youngster and making 16 appearances for the club so far this season.

The winger has been a key member of the side so far this season, despite only contributing one goal and zero assists so far. He has shown great potential at The Den and has been involved in the Millwall squad in all but one match this season when he was dropped for the tie against Huddersfield Town last month.

But with attacking reinforcements arriving in South London, it could make sense for the youngster to gain some minutes elsewhere.

Millwall are considering a loan move away for Esse

Millwall have revealed that they are open to a loan deal for Esse, with Edwards considering a move away for the 18-year-old for the second half of the season.

The manager spoke to Southwark News about the youngster, revealing that the club would be open to letting the midfielder leave the club on loan this January, but only if the clubs in question were doing the best thing for the player.

He said: “I’d say at the moment he’s likely [to still be at Millwall when the window shuts]. At the same time if we have a conversation in the next week and there was a situation where we had offers and we all felt this was definitely going to be the best thing for Romain’s development at this time… I know every young player wants game time and wants everything as quickly as possible for their development, but at the same time we need a well-stacked squad to be competing.

“If we got to a point next week where we felt something was there on the table that was doable and worked really well for all of us, then I’d be open to consider it. But, at the same time, I would be very clear that I’m also very keen to still keep working with Rom on a daily basis and hopefully get him to a place as quick as possible where he can impact for us. It’s kind of watch this space and take it one week at a time at the moment.”

While staying at the club would help the winger in learning how to play the style of the rest of the team and building chemistry with his teammates, a move away from the club could be the best thing for Esse if the right offer comes in for the player.

Being a part of the squad at his club is an important part of a player's development, but a chance to get first-team football at a professional club is something that Millwall should consider when looking at Esse's future.

While he has made several substitute appearances this season for the Lions, the teenager will benefit hugely from a consistent run of matches, where he can gain the experience he needs.
