Milan welcomed Cagliari to the San Siro on Saturday and walked away with three points after a statement second half.
Scorers: Bennacer 35′, Pulisic 59′, 86′, Reijnders 74′, Leão 83′; Nández 63′
Stefano Pioli’s men registered their first win in six games across all competitions after digging deep to unlock Cagliari.
Milan dominated possession of the ball (70%) but had to wait out most of the first half as the visitors proved a formidable side.
The opener arrived just before the break when Ismaël Bennacer found himself in the right place at the right time to volley home a deflected shot. The second half, however, is when the floodgates opened.
Christian Pulisic was next on the scoresheet when he jumped on a perfect through-ball from substitute Rafael Leão and beat goalkeeper Simone Scuffet one-on-one.
Minutes later, however, the visitors erased any clean sheet hopes when Nahitan Nández split two Milan defenders and connected with Gabriele Zappa’s cross for 2-1.
Tijjani Reijnders later restored the two-goal lead for Milan with a rocket strike. It proved to be vital, too, as Cagliari hit the woodwork twice near the 80-minute mark.
And while the visitors suggested they still had some energy for a potential comeback, Leão recorded a goal of his own thanks to his speed before Pulisic secured a second for 24 goals and assists across all competitions in his first season.
Milan sit second in the table while Cagliari are 15th, only three points above the drop.
