Italian reports are suggesting that both Milan and Manchester United have the same idea on the transfer market, with Joshua Zirkzee as first choice and Romelu Lukaku their Plan B.

Perhaps fittingly considering both clubs share a similar nickname – The Devil and the Red Devils – they seem to be pursuing the same targets this summer as well.

It is no secret that both are in the hunt for Bologna striker Zirkzee, who has a €40m release clause in his contract that can be activated by anyone.

The issue therefore is to agree personal terms, which Milan did weeks ago, and pay the €15m commission demanded by agent Kia Joorabchian.

The Rossoneri are refusing to hand over that amount of commission, seeing it as a matter of principle and precedent, which has therefore allowed Manchester United into the race.

Zirkzee and Lukaku seen as alternatives

At the same time, Milan are linked with Chelsea outcast Lukaku, who has an asking price of circa €35m following the loan spell with Roma.

However, the surprise news reported by Calciomercato.it today is that Lukaku is also seen as an alternative for Manchester United in case they don’t get Zirkzee.

It would be a return to Old Trafford, where the 31-year-old already played from 2017 to 2019, until the €74m move to Inter.

He was deeply unpopular and struggled with Manchester United, so a return would inevitably cause controversy, but manager Erik ten Hag seemingly thinks he could get the best out of him.
