Dries Mertens has kept fans of Napoli on their toes recently after leaving Galatasaray, hinting that he’d be open to an Italian return.
VoetbalPrimeur suggests that the winger could return, having recently being named an honorary citizen of Naples. In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, he hinted that he could continue as a football player for one more season, possibly with Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku:
“First of all, I want to rest a bit. Secondly: I want to be a better father. Thirdly: I might want to continue playing football, maybe here…”
“I have not thought about it seriously, now I want to take some time to think. But you should never say never.”
Realistically, continuing to play as he pushes 40 seems unlikely. “I am thinking about hanging up my boots,” said Mertens.
That does not mean that he is turning his back on football, though. “The idea of returning to Napoli in a different role does fascinate me.”
