South African under-20 national team head coach Raymond Mdaka has announced his preliminary squad for the FIFA U20 World Cup set to be staged in Chile next month.
Amajita have been placed in group E alongside the United States of America (USA), France and the New Caledonia, who will be making their debut in the global showpiece.
The South African squad comprises of a host of regular names, including Mfundo Vilakazi, Langelihle Phili, Kutlwano Letlhaku, Tylon Smith, Fletcher Smythe Lowe, Neo Rapoo, Siviwe Magidigidi, among others.
However, the provisional squad raised a few eyebrows, particularly with the exclusion of highly rated Orlando Pirates teenage captain Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who is expected to make the cut in Hugo Broos’ final squad.
The senior national team is set to square off against Lesotho and Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Bloemfontein next month.
Meanwhile, having guided Amajita to a 2024 COSAFA Cup triumph and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) glory, Mdaka will be eager to lift the World Cup, with the tournament set to commence on 27 September.
