Journalist Mauro Cezar has weighed in on the contrasting recent campaigns of Flamengo and Fluminense in the FIFA Club World Cup, urging Flamengo supporters to adopt a more measured perspective regarding their club’s elimination, according to Lance.
Following Fluminense’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Al Hilal to reach the Club World Cup semifinals—a historic progression for the Tricolor das Laranjeiras—Mauro Cezar noted frustration among some Flamengo fans regarding their own club’s earlier exit at the same stage. Addressing these sentiments on social media, he commented that many Flamengo fans seem to be searching for excuses for their team's elimination, focusing on issues like tactical setup instead of the broader context.
He highlighted that Fluminense benefited from a more straightforward path, facing comparatively less formidable opposition than Flamengo did in their previous campaign. “The Tricolor faced more accessible opponents (today, there’s no comparison between Bayern’s side and a struggling Inter since their humiliating Champions League defeat) and took advantage. They won and are in the semifinals,” remarked Mauro. He emphasized there is no direct correlation between the achievements of the two Rio clubs in the competition and called on Flamengo supporters to show “at least a little humility and accept elimination as something inevitable within the competition’s context.”
The match itself, played in Orlando, saw Fluminense navigate a tight encounter with Al Hilal. Martinelli opened the scoring with an angled strike in the first half before Marcos Leonardo equalized for the Saudi side shortly after the break. Fluminense regained the advantage through Hércules, who finished coolly following a well-worked move midway through the second period. In the closing stages, Al Hilal pressed for another equalizer, but Fluminense withstood the pressure to secure their place in the last four.
Mauro Cezar’s comments serve as a reminder of the varying dynamics that can influence tournament progress, from the relative strengths of opponents to individual match circumstances. He argues that comparisons between the two campaigns are troubling when stripped of context, underscoring that disappointment for one side should not diminish the merit of another’s success or breed ill-will among rival supporters.
His verdict is clear: while Fluminense have made headlines for breaking new ground in the competition, Flamengo’s past elimination shouldn’t lead to misplaced resentment or a rewriting of recent history. Accepting defeat and celebrating rivals’ achievement, he suggests, is simply part of the realities of club football at the highest level.
