It is looking increasingly like Matthijs de Ligt is going to become Dan Ashworth’s first signing as Manchester United’s sporting director.

It was reported overnight that United were in talks with De Ligt’s people but had not yet made an approach to Bayern Munich for their player.

But things are moving fast and there have been two significant updates since that report was published.

First, Dutch outlet De Telegraaf reports that “United have made …de Ligt (24) a contract proposal for five seasons.

“The management of the defender of Oranje, who is preparing for the round of 16 of the European Championship against Romania, is negotiating with Erik ten Hag’s club.

“It is expected that an agreement can be reached in the short term, sources close to the English club report.

“Manchester United and Bayern Munich are already in talks about the transfer fee of the international.”

This bold claim is supported by ESPN’s Rob Dawson, who writes: “United have made contact with De Ligt’s representatives and an official approach to Bayern is expected soon.”

Dawson’s report suggests that De Ligt is seen as an alternative to the overpriced Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton, although other reports have claimed the two deals are independent of one another.

It is thought that two centre backs might be recruited, particularly if one of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire is sold and if Jonny Evans is not given a one-year extension.

There is some discrepancy between what United want to pay for De Ligt (a maximum of €40 million) and what Bayern want to receive for him (around €60 million).

However, given the 24 year old’s indifferent form and injury issues, coupled with the deflated state of the transfer market, the Bavarians will surely acknowledge that is somewhat optimistic.
