Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge recently joined Uli Hoeness in singing the praises of Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz, even describing him as the best player in Germany.

The fact that Rummenigge publicly put Wirtz before Bayern Munich's own Jamal Musiala, who is also widely regarded as one of Germany's brightest prospects, came as a surprise to Lothar Matthäus.

According to the former Germany and Bayern star, Rummenigge's comments will make Musiala feel overlooked.

"Musiala recently signed a contract extension worth around 175 million, which is of course a lot of money," Matthäus told Sky Germany.

"To say that someone like that is not the best player in Germany is a slap in the face for Musiala," he added.

“He could have said that he wanted to get Wirtz because he's also a very good player, or just as good as Musiala, or different from Musiala - but also important for the team. But in this form, I think 'Kalle' is a bit on the wrong track.”

Matthäus added that he struggles to understand why Rummenigge would say something like that.

“I was surprised when I read it. But I believe that ‘Kalle’ will eventually put things right with his manner - especially internally.”
