Mats Hummels’ potential return to Borussia Dortmund for the coming summer Club World Cup rests entirely with the player. Sport Bild reports that Hummels’ former Bundesliga side have established contact with the 36-year-old, though it is not specified whether a specific offer has been tendered.
The German tabloid doesn’t rule out a Hummels return to the pitch this summer, but does claim that the German defender himself leans towards taking an extended break from action. After officially announcing his retirement, Hummels apparently wishes to give himself a full calendar year to consider his future.
Sport Bild goes on to state that BVB are even interested in handing Hummels a front office position or help him launch his coaching career. Such an outcome – in view of Dortmund’s notorious front office problems and Hummels’ direct criticism thereof – also doesn’t seem likely.
In any event, it appears that that door remains open for Hummels to chose in whatever capacity he wishes to serve. Nico Schlotterbeck’s injury leaves the club in need of an extra central defender this summer. Current BVB head coach Niko Kovac is on record as stating that he would be pleased to welcome Hummels back into the fold.
