After the crushing defeat in Feyenoord, Bayern’s misery has been compounded by the results of the medical examination on left-back Alphonso Davies. Bayern Munich have confirmed that the 24-year-old has sustained a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh in the match against Feyenoord and will be sidelined for the time being.

According to SportBild, the Canadian international is expected to be out for 4–6 weeks. This marks his second hamstring injury of the season, having already missed two matches in December due to it. Davies was subbed off in the 45th minute in the clash against Feyenoord. The Canadian’s injury was a pivotal setback for Bayern in the match as his replacement Raphaël Guerreiro would go on to gift a penalty to the home side with an amateurish tackle only a few minutes after coming on.

Alphonso Davies has been one of Bayern’s most influential players this season and his absence could have a huge impact on the Rekordmeister business end of the campaign. Amid this setback, there is some good news regarding the Canadian: he is close to signing a contract extension with FC Bayern, finally putting an end to a frustratingly long saga of transfer rumors.

Canadian unlikely to feature in crucial games in February

The 4–5 weeks time frame for Davies’ recovery means that the left-back will certainly miss the potential title-race defining clash against Bayern Leverkusen on 15th February. It is also possible that he won’t be back in time for the following game against Eintracht Frankfurt on 23rd February.

The loss against Feyenoord has drastically reduced Bayern’s chances of finishing in the top 8 of the Champions League table. Hence it is very likely that they may have to participate in the Knockout round play-offs. The first leg takes place on February 11/12 and second leg on 18/19. Davies might miss these games as well.

With Sacha Boey and Hiroki Ito already out injured Bayern’s defensive depth is further weakened with Davies’ latest injury. To add to that, Konrad Laimer is suspended (yellow card accumulation) for Die Roten’s upcoming game against Freiburg which means Joshua Kimmich will probably be deployed in the right-back role. Raphaël Guerreiro will fill in for the injured Davies while he recovers. Adam Aznou is another option for the left-back position. However, it seems unlikely that Vincent Kompany would entrust the inexperienced youngster with such a major responsibility in the approaching decisive run of games.
