Manchester United were close to pulling off another remarkable comeback on Sunday, but eventually ran out of time in the end to lose 3-4 against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It was the visitors who started on the front foot, taking the lead through Mason Mount in the 14th minute.

It was only the Englishman’s second goal for the club since signing in the summer of 2023, and incidentally, it arrived at the same venue against the same opposition.

But then the hosts took charge and bullied the young backline and ended up scoring four times through a Luke Shaw own goal, Kevin Schade brace, while Yoane Wissa added the fourth.

United conceded four goals

The visitors showed their trademark comeback spirit through late goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Amad but it was yet another defeat in the end.

Goalscorer Mount was asked whether the heavily rotated squad, with Ruben Amorim making nine changes, led to the defeat but the former Chelsea star admitted that the four goals were poor giveaways and the Red Devils should have been much more solid irrespective of the changes.

“We need to do better. We need to win this game,” he told Premier League Productions. “We started well but that second half and end of the first half conceding goals where we knew what was coming.

“We knew they put crosses in the box and we need to defend that better. We can perform better in the game. We still need to perform. There were changes, but it’s Manchester United so any team that goes out there that puts on the shirt we need to perform and win games.

“I know there’s a big game on Thursday but first and foremost was today. We needed to win the game but we didn’t. It was too late when they scored four.”

The spirit of fighting back was evident again, which will have pleased the head coach and it was something Mount alluded to again.

Thursday is the be all and end all

“We’ve shown that before. We never let the game go until the final whistle but we can’t let ourselves get in that position. It’s a bit of personality and character but we shouldn’t get in that position.”

Given Thursday’s humongous Europa League semi-final second leg, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad’s goals were obviously help with the confidence. With Champions League qualification at stake, it almost seems like Thursday or bust for the Red Devils.

“It’s a massive end to the season. We have a big game on Thursday. It doesn’t matter the scoreline. We attack it like it’s 0-0. We know what we need to do.

“We can get into the Champions League next season and that’s the most important thing. The season we’ve had in the Premier League is something we need to look at massively, but if we can get into final and win that it’s a positive end to the season.”
