Russell Martin’s mini-meltdown after Rangers’ disappointing 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday took many people by surprise.

Martin was often guilty of being overly protective of his players during his time at Southampton, preferring to blame himself for their dismal performances.

He promised to be more ruthless following his appointment at Rangers and demonstrated that he meant what he said after the game at Fir Park.

Martin criticised the mentality of some Rangers players, accusing them of jogging around and saying they need to drop their inflated egos.

His comments mirror what numerous pundits have said about Rangers in recent seasons and should be welcomed by the club’s fans.

Supporters did not universally welcome Martin’s appointment, and he has a massive job on his hands to prove he is the right man for the job.

That latter point could work to the club’s advantage. Martin desperately needs to rebuild his reputation after his tenure at Southampton went pear-shaped.

One of the main features of his managerial career is that his teams are streaky. When ‘Plan A’ works, everything is rosy in the garden.

However, his lack of a ‘Plan B’ has given him a one-dimensional reputation. Managing Rangers gives him the opportunity to change the narrative.

Martin has absolutely nothing to lose at Rangers. If he is successful, the world is his oyster. If he fails, he will be a busted flush as a manager.

That level of jeopardy from a career perspective is precisely what the Glasgow giants need in their manager right now.
