In a recent report, The Athletic stated that Manchester United were eager to re-sign Brighton and Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck. It has been revealed that the Red Devils were eyeing a move to bring the English talent back to Old Trafford in the last transfer window.

Welbeck’s Important Role At Brighton Last Season

Welbeck enjoyed a good run of form at the English club in the previous campaign when he put in a handful of impressive displays for them in the final third. The 34-year-old scored 11 times and earned four assists in 36 matches for the Seagulls last season across all competitions.

The English striker managed to shine at times on the offensive end of the field as he averaged 2.51 shots per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He kept 39% of his attempts on target. Welbeck was even tidy with his ball distribution after completing 84.9% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at Brighton will run out next summer. Thus, it makes sense for the Red Devils to try and sign him on a cut-price deal this January or at the end of this campaign.

Should Manchester United Boss Ruben Amorim Recruit Welbeck In January?

Welbeck is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He can create the odd chance for his teammates to find the back of the net and remains a decent dribbler with the ball at his feet.

The English forward has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and won’t take any time to adjust to life at Man United. However, he won’t be a long-term fix to the Mancunian club’s goal-scoring problems.

Welbeck would no doubt add more depth to Ruben Amorim’s frontline. He is still good enough to challenge for a regular first-team spot at the Mancunian club. Furthermore, the English sensation could act as a good mentor to Benjamin Sesko, who has made a tough start to life at Old Trafford.

At 34, Welbeck might have a couple of good seasons left in him. Therefore, Amorim should focus on recruiting him on the cheap when the transfer window reopens this January.
