Manchester United are exploring the transfer market to find Andre Onana’s replacement, as per reports.
Onana is once again in the spotlight for his erratic style of shot-stopping that continues to deliver mixed results, much to the frustration of the United faithful.
Against Ipswich Town, the 28-year-old rushed from his line, leading to a mix-up between him and Patrick Dorgu. Ipswich forward Jaden Philogene capitalised on it and gave the visitors a lead with a simple finish on Wednesday night.
Erik ten Hag signed the ex-Ajax man from Inter Milan to replace David de Gea but so far the decision has proven to be underwhelming, to say the least.
The Cameroon international is far from a reliable option between the sticks and it has emerged that the club’s hierarchy are already looking to replace him.
According to Fichajes, Onana’s frequent mistakes have “raised doubts” within United.
It is understood the Premier League giants are evaluating their options and have identified AC Milan number one Mike Maignan as “one of the main candidates to fill the position that Onana would leave.”
United’s coaching staff reportedly consider addressing their goalkeeping department a priority and have set their sights on the France international.
Maignan has established himself as one of Europe’s best goalkeepers, impressing with his agility and box dominance.
United, meanwhile, continue to be one of the Premier League’s most vulnerable sides in set-piece situations with Onana as their number one.
The report adds that Maignan’s continuity in Milan is not guaranteed and United’s interest could convince him to leave the Rossoneri.
Having said that, Amorim’s budget for the summer transfer window is expected to be limited and the idea of another marquee goalkeeper signing appears unrealistic at this stage.
