Manchester United registered their lowest-ever Premier League finish last season but never lost the support of the Old Trafford faithful.

Erik ten Hag side’s struggles on the pitch were not reflected in the footfall coming through the gates at the Theatre of Dreams with United fans flocking to see their team despite the poor form.

So much so that, as reported by The Manchester Evening News, United recorded the highest aggregate home attendance for domestic games across Europe last season.

Figures that were reported state that United’s home attendance totaled up to 1,397,148, eclipsing every other team on the continent.

United’s failure to progress in Europe meant that Borussia Dortmund topped United when it came to aggregate numbers across all competitions, with United finishing third – behind AC Milan and the Germans.

Dortmund also had the highest average attendance in home league matches, with 81,305 supporters attending Signal Iduna Park per Bundesliga game.

However, with Bundesliga teams playing two fewer league matches than Premier League sides, Dortmund were unable to catch United on the overall metric.

United fans continue to throw their support behind their club even after a decade of underperformance that has left them trailing behind the leading lights in the English top flight.

New minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS consortium will be looking to boost these numbers even further, given their ambitious plans to build a brand new home stadium.

Ratcliffe’s aim is to increase United’s capacity to 100,000, alongside state-of-the-art facilities and hospitality for the home fans to enjoy on matchdays.

United are expected to announce a decision on their final plans by the end of the calendar year with supporters split on whether a new modern stadium trumps the choice of refurbishing the historic and famous Old Trafford.

Whatever the call, INEOS will be well aware of the importance of United fans who are desperate for an upturn in fortunes on the pitch.

Back-to-back defeats followed the opening day win against Fulham and signs are pointing towards another long season watching Ten Hag’s troops.

However, United have a great chance to bounce back this weekend with a trip to newly-promoted Southampton expected to yield three points, and in doing so kickstart the new season into life.
