Manchester United appear fully focused on strengthening their midfield during the final days of the window but Ben Chilwell’s availability might tempt the club to reconsider their stance.

United have entered the new season without a fit senior left-back to rely on, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia still sidelined due to injuries.

Amid this, the Red Devils have been presented with an opportunity to sign Chilwell from Chelsea.

According to HITC, the English full-back has been offered to the Red Devils after being informed he is not part of long-term plans at Stamford Bridge.

Chilwell has struggled with injuries throughout his time in London. However, under Mauricio Pochettino, who named him him vice-caption, the 27-year-old was always considered the preferred left-back at the club.

Enzo Maresca left him out of the matchday squad for the Premier League opener against Manchester City over the weekend, placing his trust in Marc Cucurella instead.

It is understood Chilwell and Raheem Sterling are now training away from the first team. Reflecting on the situation, Maresca said: “I just try to be honest… I told Raheem he’s going to struggle to get minutes with us. Chilly, he’s going to struggle here too.”

United allegedly have a “significant interest” in signing the England international, who would “relish the chance” to move to the Theatre of Dreams this summer.

However, The Peoples Person recently relayed a report claiming United have decided not to sign a new left-back this summer. Ten Hag does not expect Shaw to miss too many games. Further, right-backs Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui are reportedly considered options for the left flank too.

Taking all this into consideration as well as their financial fair play concerns, it is tough to see United change their plans late in the window and sanction a permanent move for Chilwell.

United found themselves in a similar position last summer and signed Sergio Reguilón, albeit with an option to terminate his loan move mid-season.

It is not far-fetched to assume that a similar favourable loan deal for the Champions League winner could give the United board something to think about in the final days of the window.

Still, how such a deal would fit into Chelsea’s plans, who are on a selling spree this summer to balance their books, remains to be seen.
