Manchester United midfielder Griffiths signs first professional deal | OneFootball

Manchester United’s teenage midfielder Mared Griffiths has signed her first professional contract with the club.

The Red Devils announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

It has been reported that the 18-year-old has signed a two-year deal at The Leigh Sports Village.

Griffiths joined Manchester United last summer after impressing within the FAW North Academy structure and she continued to develop in The Red Devils’ Professional Game Academy League side.

The youngster grabbed the headlines on her senior Manchester United debut. She came off the bench to score two goals in a 6-0 Adobe Women’s FA Cup fifth round victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Griffiths is a player with a big future and Manchester United have therefore moved to retain her services on a professional basis.

After signing her first professional deal, Griffiths said “Yeah, I’m well impressed with myself and the family are so grateful for this opportunity from the club.

“I think once I left the FAW Academy in North Wales, moving up to Manchester and playing with the Under-21s there’s always an aim [to play in the senior team].

“You can’t just settle down with playing for the 21s. I think every player has to set high standards for themselves and you have to back yourself to be able to do it one day.

“Being able to target something like this and achieve it first year in, I think it’s a good deal at the end of the day.”

Griffiths will be hoping to make her mark on the Manchester United first team in the club’s pre-season programme.
