Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has reportedly been approached to potentially become the next manager of Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle.

The former United captain has been out of management since he was sacked as Birmingham boss in January.

He replaced the popular John Eustace but was in the dugout for only 15 games. He lost nine of them. Prior to his stint with Birmingham, Rooney held coaching roles in the MLS with DC United before switching to Derby County.

The former United captain has since been heavily involved in punditry duty and has made appearances on Gary Neville’s The Overlap podcast and Sky Sports.

However, he has always maintained that his desire is to make a managerial return as that’s where his heart truly lies.

If a report by The Telegraph is to be believed, Rooney may get his wish soon enough.

The 38-year-old has been approached by Plymouth Argyle for an interview this week and is a candidate for the hot seat at Home Park Stadium.

Argyle are on the hunt for someone to take over the reins of the team after they parted ways with Ian Forster.

Forster was relieved of his duties at Plymouth in April just months after he left his position as Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq assistant to join them.

His spell was a disaster as he oversaw just one win in 12 games before his dismissal.

It’s understood that Rooney’s candidacy for the job is being driven by Plymouth’s director of football Neil Dewsnip. The pair enjoy a close relationship.

United’s record goalscorer is not the only individual in the running for the role. Former Sheffield United gaffer Paul Heckingbottom was also interviewed earlier this week.
