Earlier today, United confirmed the sacking of Erik ten Hag after a string of poor performances and results.

The Dutchman was relieved of his duties, with the final nail in the coffin being a 2-1 loss against West Ham on Sunday.

Moments ago, it emerged that Amorim is the Red Devils’ top target to replace Ten Hag. It was indicated that United are working on securing the 39-year-old’s services, with a verbal agreement already in place.

According to Florian Plettenberg, the Sporting Lisbon boss does not want to wait until the summer and is eager to get started at Old Trafford immediately.

Plettenberg wrote on X, “Understand that Ruben Amorim is very open to joining Manchester United with immediate effect.”

“Talks between the clubs are ongoing, and it largely depends on Sporting Lisbon at this point. Originally, Amorim intended to move next summer, when his release clause in the mid-eight-figure range would apply.”

“Amorim is now the leading candidate for ManUtd. The first concrete talks took place a few weeks ago, as revealed.”

Meanwhile, Graeme Bailey reveals that United are trying to get Amorim’s appointment over the line before Sunday.

Bailey notes, “Sources have told TBR Football that Amorim was a target for United in the summer, as were Frank and Nagelsmann, and he was insistent that he would like to stay with Sporting until next summer.”

“However, after talks with United’s hierarchy with sporting director Dan Ashworth leading the chase, Amorim is believed to have been persuaded to make the move to England mid-season.”

“United are due to face Leicester City in the League Cup on Wednesday when interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge, but it is believed that Ashworth hopes to have Amorim confirmed by the weekend when Chelsea travel to Old Trafford.”

Amorim’s side are set to take on C.D. Nacional on Friday for the quarter-final of Taça da Liga. It’s certainly a fixture that a section of United fans will have their eye on.
