These days, scoring nine goals in a month is an ask for Manchester United, but in the Sir Alex Ferguson glory years, it often happened in the space of a couple of games, and on one occasion, in a single game.

It was on this day in 1995 that the Red Devils demolished Ipswich 9-0 at Old Trafford in what remains the Premier League era's joint-biggest victory.

At the time, United were reeling from the season-ending ban handed out to Eric Cantona for his kung-fu kick at Crystal Palace weeks earlier, but new boy, and then-British record transfer fee breaker, Andy Cole stepped up against the Tractor Boys, and then some.

The striker became the first player in the post-1992 league era to hit five goals in one game. A brace from Mark Hughes, in addition to strikes from midfield pair Roy Keane and Paul Ince rounded off the scoring.

United would not go on to win the league that season, Blackburn famously pipping them to the post, but would continue to dominate English football over the next 15+ years, and their record win lasted even longer.

It was not until October 2019 that a side won 9-0 again in the top flight - Leicester's mauling of Southampton - and United would do so again in February 2021, also against the hapless Saints.

How Ruben Amorim could do with a striker like Cole right now...
