Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle bought Erik ten Hag some breathing space, allowing him to deliver a rousing speech in front of the delighted Old Trafford crowd ahead of the FA Cup final.

Man United forwards, including young stars like Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, stepped up to keep the side’s hopes of qualifying for European competition alive.

However, familiar defensive frailties remained evident, underlining that no matter what happens in the final two games of the season, INEOS need to go all out to add at least one elite centre-back to their ranks.

Fortunately for the United faithful, it appears the club’s hierarchy has already started working on strengthening the backline which has let in 84 goals in all competitions this season, their most in a single campaign in more than 45 years.

Manchester United contact Antonio Silva’s representatives

United have made an approach to sign Benfica sensation Antonio Silva, according to TEAMtalk.

The 20-year-old central defender has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Europe, with his exceptional passing range and composure in possession attracting a number of high-profile suitors.

All signs point to him being the next big export from the Liga Portugal. In fact, the report suggests Silva may have already played in his last home game for the Portuguese giants.

It is understood United have made “their first move” for Silva by contacting the Portugal international’s entourage to explore the possibility of a summer move to Old Trafford.

Benfica are unlikely to stand in their star player’s way should he agree to join United, who are searching for an ideal Raphael Varane replacement.

However, knowing the English side’s predicament, the Portuguese club may compel them to meet their asking price, which is thought to be in the region of €100m (£86m).

Given United’s financial constraints due to the Premier League’s PSR rules, Silva’s signing appears a far-fetched dream.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and company would be wise to target Tosin Adarabioyo instead. The 26-year-old Fulham star will be available on a free transfer this summer.
