One of the topics to monitor over the second half of the season is the contract situation surrounding Kevin De Bruyne. The Manchester City legend is now in the final six months of his current contract. As he battled injury and fitness issues earlier this season it did appear that his time at Manchester City may be coming to an end. But De Bruyne has returned to his best during City’s past two matches against Brentford and Ipswich Town. Based on those two performances City simply must offer De Bruyne a contract extension.
De Bruyne played a key role in Manchester City’s 6-nil win over Ipswich Town yesterday. He picked up two assists as his link-up play with Jeremy Doku and Phil Foden was a standout feature of Manchester City’s play. But watching De Bruyne play yesterday and against Brentford you can tell that he is over the fitness issues that had plagued him earlier this season.
That’s the key to whether or not Kevin De Bruyne gets a contract extension with Manchester City you feel. If he is fit and firing he remains one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League. Although his legs aren’t what they once were he is still a brilliant player when he is fully fit. He has shown that yesterday and against Brentford. There is a role for De Bruyne to play in Manchester City’s rebuild. That is still obvious to see. If he can remain fit for the second half of this season De Bruyne could help fire Manchester City to honours this season.
Speaking after his team’s win over Ipswich Town Pep Guardiola believes De Bruyne is getting back on top of his game. Speaking with the BBC in a quote relayed by CityXtra he said: “Look at Kevin [De Bruyne] in the last two or three games; this is the Kevin in his prime!”
If De Bruyne can continue his strong recent form over the second half of the season Manchester City simply must offer him a contract extension. If he can stay fit he offers something that no other City player can. He remains that good despite getting on in years. But for me, Manchester City must offer De Bruyne a new contract. He’s simply too good and important to Pep Guardiola’s side to let leave at the end of this season.
