Following the January transfer window Manchester City will have to complete the 24/25 season with Matheus Nunes and Rico Lewis as the two players tasked with playing at right-back. There is also the potential of Manuel Akanji helping out in the role. With Kyle Walker’s departure to AC Milan, those seem to be Pep Guardiola’s options in the position for the remainder of this season. It also appears that Kyle Walker’s time at Manchester City is now over. With that in mind, it does seem that City could do with signing a right-back next summer.
One player who could add a different dimension to Manchester City’s play is Bayer Leverkusen full-back Jeremie Frimpong. The Dutch international has once again had a strong season for Xabi Alonso’s side. Frimpong is an attacking full-back who can also play on the right wing. If you look at how Pep Guardiola has used Matheus Nunes at right-back you do get the sense that if you put Frimpong in the same position, Manchester City would be an infinitely more dangerous proposition going forward. Frimpong is an attacking weapon, and by signing him, City would be adding even more attacking quality to their squad. Although, there are question marks that surround Frimpong’s defensive abilities.
There may be a chance that Manchester City do move for Jeremie Frimpong at the end of the season. Jason Pettigrove has reported for CaughtOffside that Manchester City have positioned themselves to have the best chance to sign Jeremie Frimpong next summer. Pettigrove also reports that City have put themselves in a similar position to move for Florian Wirtz.
It remains to be seen if City will move for Jeremie Frimpong next summer. But he would fill a void in Pep Guardiola’s squad if they could sign him. Pep Guardiola’s squad does lack a right-back after Kyle Walker’s departure. Perhaps Frimpong is the player to fill that void in the City squad. He’d add a different dimension to Manchester City’s play so there is merit to the idea of moving for the Dutch international from a Manchester City point of view.
