Manchester City have been handed a key update in their pursuit of Newcastle and England right-back Valentino Livramento as the summer transfer window progresses.
City have sold Kyle Walker to Burnley in a deal that could be worth £5 million as part of the ongoing squad revamp led by newly-appointed director of football Hugo Viana, who has not pulled any punches since replacing Txiki Begiristain after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign at the Etihad Stadium.
Pep Guardiola’s side recorded a meagre 71-point tally in the recent Premier League campaign, crashed out of the UEFA Champions League at the Round of 16 stage and lost the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace to round off their most difficult campaign under the Catalan manager.
However, the ship seems to have turned after a ruthless first five weeks of the transfer window that has seen City part ways with Kevin De Bruyne, Scott Carson and Walker; whilst introducing Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki to their ranks.
Walker fell out of favour with Guardiola in the closing months of 2024 and lost his starting place after a series of horrid displays. The 35-year-old, who began the previous campaign as Manchester City captain, sought exile in Italy and joined AC Milan on loan till the end of the season.
Right-back has been a key area of frailty for Manchester City in recent years, with Viana and co keen to address the long-standing issue with the acquisition of a specialist right-back to make the position his own for the years to come.
Newcastle’s Valentino Livramento has been identified as City’s primary target but talks with the Tyneside club have met an impasse, with Eddie Howe adamant on holding onto the 22-year-old amid interest from the Etihad Stadium.
Livramento would represent a potent addition to Manchester City’s newlook side as it remains to be seen whether officials at the Etihad Stadium return to the negotiating table with Newcastle, who could look to demand in excess of £100 million for one of their most promising players.
Mail Sport’s Craig Hope has provided an update on Livramento’s future and whether Manchester City could pull off a stunning capture of the former Chelsea man, who won the U-21 European Championship with England in June.
Asked whether City remain keen on Livramento despite Newcastle’s tough stance, Hope wrote: “No! Manchester City’s interest is genuine and it remains. My sources in Manchester say they’d go to at least £65 million for the defender.
“The word back from Tyneside? Not even £165 million would be enough! Newcastle know Livramento is as good as irreplaceable, given his age profile and versatility, not to mention his ability and huge scope for improvement.
“There is also a feeling young players like Livramento and Lewis Hall know they’re best off under (Eddie) Howe’s tutelage at this stage in their career.”
