Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee could miss the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury, according to the BBC.
The 23-year-old came off during the second half of Man United’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday.
Subsequent medical assessments have revealed the injury may be more serious than initially feared.
Manager Ruben Amorim is expected to provide an official update during his pre-match press conference on Wednesday, ahead of the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon.
The timing of the injury could not be worse for Amorim, whose side face a crucial game at Old Trafford on Thursday. The tie is delicately balanced at 2-2 after the first leg, where Zirkzee was on the scoresheet.
Signed from Bologna last summer, Zirkzee has netted seven goals in his debut season at United.
Even though many believe his numbers need to improve, the Netherlands international forward has become increasingly influential in the Man United attacking set-up in recent weeks.
The Red Devils have a packed fixture list. However, the severity of the hamstring issue means Zirkzee may not participate in any of those matches.
Man Utd shelled out over £70 million to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in 2023, but he has been underwhelming.
United reportedly want to sell him this summer, but this Zirkzee injury gives him one last chance to prove his mettle and secure his place in the squad for next season.
Amorim will likely field Hojlund in the remaining games, and he needs to take the bull by the horns. He must give United a reason to keep him or risk being shifted off the books.
