Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadlock, capitalising on the miscommunication between Josko Gvardiol and Stefan Ortega.

After nine more minutes, Kobbie Mainoo finished a wonderfully worked goal to double United’s lead.

Pep Guardiola brought Jeremy Doku for Mateo Kovacic which brought life to City’s attacking play.

Andre Onana should have saved Doku’s strike in the 87th minute, but his goal ensured a nervy finish to the game.

United kept hold of their nerves and defeated their arch-rivals, securing European football for the next season.

Let’s get into the player ratings.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 5/10

The goalkeeper made two brilliant saves to deny Kyle Walker. He allowed Doku’s tame shot to squirm past him which could have come back to haunt United.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 9/10

A sensational defensive display from Wan-Bissaka against trickster Doku who was proving to be behind City’s every meaningful attack.

Raphael Varane – 8/10

A wonderful way to sign off for Varane who showed why he is still a magnificent defender. He defended the box well and misplaced only one of his 22 passes.

Lisandro Martinez – 7/10

Martinez has demonstrated that his presence on the field makes a night and day difference to the team. The Red Devils would have had a much better season if he had not been injured.

Diogo Dalot – 7/10

Dalot defended solidly and assisted his team to build out in possession. He launched the long ball towards Garnacho which eventually led to United’s opener.

Sofyan Amrabat – 8/10

The Morroco international repaid Ten Hag’s faith by putting on a masterclass against Man City. He acted like the leader in midfield and ensured discipline and compactness in defence.

Kobbie Mainoo – 9/10

It is frightening to imagine what levels Mainoo can touch if he performs like this at 19.

He finished his goal with aplomb, bossed the midfield and made driving runs forward with the ball to give United’s defence a breather.

He got a booking in the first half but didn’t lose his composure.

Scott McTominay – 7/10

McTominay started in an offensive role but made many defensive contributions to prevent Man City from having any space in the centre.

Marcus Rashford – 7/10

The England international lost two early sprints against Kyle Walker, prompting him to alter his playing style.

He dropped deeper and played a marvellous long ball to Garnacho in the build-up to United’s fantastic second goal. He scored a goal but it was ruled out for off-side.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10

The youngster caused a lot of headaches to the defenders which ultimately led to City’s mistake for the opener.

His goal was pivotal, giving his side the belief that they could win the game.

Bruno Fernandes – 9/10

A captain’s performance from the Portuguese magnifico. He set up Mainoo in the first half with an elegant assist which not many could have.

He put on an immense amount of hard work without possession and led the press from the front.

Substitutes

Jonny Evans – 6/10

The veteran replaced Martinez for the last 20 minutes and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Rasmus Hojlund – 7/10

No late goal to add this time but he showed an incredible work ethic to chase long balls and win two free-kicks in Man City’s half.

Victor Lindelof – NA

Too late to rate.

Mason Mount – NA

Too late to rate.
