When Queens Park Rangers missed out on the play-offs in the 2019/20 season, all connected to the club knew it was highly likely that Eberechi Eze had played his last game for the club.

The attacking midfielder had impressed for the R’s since joining the club as a teenager, but it was that final campaign where he really took his game up another level.

Eze had always been a talented individual, and he was now adding real productivity in the final third, as he finished the season with 14 goals and eight assists.

QPR will be hoping for Eberechi Eze windfall

That form put Eze on the radar of several Premier League clubs, and it was Crystal Palace who won the race for his signature, as an initial £16m deal was agreed.

Of course, that’s a substantial sum for a Championship club, but the hierarchy at QPR deserve huge credit for ensuring that a sell-on clause was part of the agreement, with reports stating that they will be in line for 20% of any profit on Eze’s next move.

Key figures at QPR clearly had faith that Eze would be a player who would flourish against the elite - and that’s exactly what has happened.

Eberechi Eze transfer latest

Now, the R’s could be ready for a big pay day, with Eze having been linked with a host of clubs in recent weeks, with Man Utd believed to now have shown an interest.

It’s thought that Eze has a release clause at Selhurst Park which means he can move on for around £60m, and his form in the final few months of the season under Oliver Glasner should make him an attractive option at that price in the modern game.

Eze’s call-up to the England squad for Euro 2024 will only increase his profile, and if he can play his part in the Three Lions winning the tournament, then that potential deal may even be seen as a bargain!

So, you can forgive those at QPR if they are getting excited about what the summer could bring, as, providing the release clause is met, they would be set to net around £8m.

Any developments on Eze’s next move are likely to wait until England’s participation in Euro 2024 is over.

Eberechi Eze is a QPR success story

It may be frustrating for the R’s that they didn’t get to enjoy Eze’s quality at Loftus Road for longer, but his transfer is an example of what the club needs to be doing moving forward.

They identified Eze as a talented young player, they gave him an opportunity to perform, and he grasped that and went on to become a key figure at the club.

He was then sold on for a massive profit, and more money could be on the way due to the sell-on clause.

In the long-term, QPR will have ambitions of reaching the Premier League themselves, but this is still the right approach, and you only have to look at the likes of Brentford and Brighton to see the importance of player trading to help you progress.

After an underwhelming few years, QPR look to have made the right appointment in Marti Cifuentes, and he needs support to implement that strategy and to help the club grow.

A high-profile move for Eze this summer should give the Spaniard a bigger transfer budget, and serve as a reminder of the sort of quality they need to develop if they are to kick-on.
