Manchester United climbed into the top half of the Premier League table following their 4-0 win versus Everton at Old Trafford yesterday.

The club are just four points adrift of the Champions League places and arch-rivals Manchester City.

The Red Devils had a poor start to the top-flight campaign under manager Erik ten Hag, but their fortunes have changed since the Dutchman’s departure.

United picked up four points in a couple of games under interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy.

They have attained a similar points tally under new manager Ruben Amorim. The victory over the Toffees moved them back into the top 10.

The club are now ninth in the standings, with a better goal difference than City.

City have had a dreadful slump under manager Pep Guardiola. They lost their fourth league game on the bounce after Liverpool outclassed them yesterday.

Their goal difference currently stands at +3, one less than United after their rout of the Toffees.

United’s defensive record has been quite impressive despite the patchy league form. They are the joint-second-best in the Premier League with only 13 goals conceded.

By contrast, City have already shipped 19 goals this season.

It is quite clear that there is a momentum shift at the moment. United are only four points behind City and could potentially leapfrog them when they meet at the Etihad Stadium in mid-December.

United face Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in the league before that game. The midweek trip to the Emirates Stadium should provide clarity about how much they have improved under Amorim’s tutelage.
