Matthijs de Ligt sustained a head injury that left him bloodied, prompting the referee to call for medical staff to take him off three times.

Unfortunately, with United down to ten men, Brentford capitalised and scored from a corner.

Frustrated with the referee’s decisions, United returned for the second half with renewed determination.

Alejandro Garnacho scored with a fantastic volley to change the mood at the Theatre of Dreams. Hojlund put United ahead after a beautiful assist from Bruno Fernandes.

Let’s get into the player ratings.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 7/10

Onana played a superb long pass to set up a 1v1 opportunity for Diogo Dalot.

He was rooted in his line for Brentford’s goal but made an excellent save by denying Christian Norgaard.

Diogo Dalot – 6/10

Dalot was at fault for allowing Pinnock a free header for the goal.

He improved in the second half. His storming run almost resulted in the third goal but he failed to keep his composure against the goalkeeper.

Matthijs de Ligt – 8/10

A dominating performance at the back. He looked committed to winning every duel and played 90 minutes even after getting a nasty head injury early in the game.

Jonny Evans – 7/10

The veteran played a stable second fiddle to De Ligt and looked solid defensively.

Lisandro Martinez – 7/10

Martinez showed the presence of a left-footed full-back cannot be understated.

He provided limited support in the attack but played a crucial role in defence. His movement in the midfield helped Eriksen to play further forward.

Casemiro – 6/10

The Brazil international was reinstated in the Premier League starting line-up for the first time in nearly two months and he didn’t disappoint.

He lost the ball possession several times but made crucial tackles in the second half. He was hooked off with a possible calf injury.

Christian Eriksen – 7/10

The Denmark international continued his excellent form. He brought control in the midfield and ensured United were rarely overrun.

Bruno Fernandes – 7/10

The Portugal international showcased remarkable game awareness with a clever flick to set up Hojlund. Sometimes, deft touch can produce the results that Hollywood passes cannot.

He should have added a goal to his name. No red cards today.

Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10

Ten Hag deployed him in his favoured left-wing role and Garnacho repaid the faith.

He came tantalisingly close to scoring before unleashing a stunning volley to equalise for United right after the break.

Marcus Rashford – 7/10

He showcased flashes of the 2022/23 version of Rashford. He played a wonderful cross for Garnacho to earn an assist. He rediscovered his attacking touch despite playing on the right wing.

Rasmus Hojlund – 7/10

Hojlund struggled in aerial battles at the start of the game, but he became more involved as it progressed.

His clever flicks to evade defenders and set up the wingers were impressive. He capped it off with a clinical finish over Mark Flekken to put United ahead.

Substitutes

Joshua Zirkzee – 5/10

Zirkzee should have capitalised on the excellent set-up from Rashford.

Manuel Ugarte – NA

Too late to rate.

Victor Lindelof – NA
