Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez suffered a serious injury against Crystal Palace in his team’s 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were beaten by Oliver Glasner’s team convincingly away at Man United but the defeat turned into horror for Ruben Amorim’s side when they lost star defender Martinez through an injury.

While challenging for the ball against Palace winger Ismaila Sarr, Martinez landed his foot in an awkward position which resulted in a serious injury for him.

After being treated by the medical staff on the pitch, he was taken off on a stretcher and the World Cup winner was seen in tears.

According to the Daily Mail, via reports in South America, Man United fear that the centre-back will be out for action for up to six months with a torn ACL in his left knee.

The 27-year-old is expected to be ruled out for the rest of the season after what looks like an unfortunate injury for the defender.

After the defeat against Palace, Amorim provided an update on the injury suffered by Martinez.

“Licha [Martínez] is really important for us, not just as a player, but as a character,” Amorim said.

“I think it’s a bad situation. Let’s wait and see with the doctor, but I think it is serious.

“We are going to see in the next days but I think it is a serious situation. He felt it and when you are a player, you know when it is something serious. We are here to help him in this difficult moment like he has helped us.”

United have been unlucky with the fitness issues of some of their defenders in recent seasons.

Luke Shaw spent most of last year out of action with an injury while the likes of Tyrell Malacia and Victor Lindelof have faced issues of their own.

Even Martinez has been unlucky with two previous injuries at Old Trafford since his move from Ajax.

As far as options for Amorim are concerned, the Portuguese manager still have three good defenders in Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro to cover for the injured Martinez.
